The test of language ability of Grade 12 learners that Sanet Steyn and others will pilot and experiment with in translation and equivalent formats will be known as the Test of Advanced Language Ability (TALA). Sanet will do this work as part of ICELDA’s Home Languages project. Before she left to study in the Netherlands, she had begun work on the design of this generic test of high-level language ability, as defined by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) that was recently released for Home Languages at school. This venture dovetails with other work initially commissioned by Umalusi being undertaken both at the UFS and at NWU. It also involves project associates Colleen du Plessis (who is doing the anchor study) and Johannes Mahlasela (for Sesotho). Sanet is an ICELDA project associate who recently obtained the MA in Applied Linguistics at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen with distinction.
