Professor Albert Weideman

Both Sanet Steyn and Albert Weideman were involved in the 4th International Conference on Language, Education and Diversity (LED 2015), held in Auckland in November. Sanet read a paper on her development of a Test of Early Academic Literacy (TEAL), the topic of her master’s dissertation at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Albert Weideman’s joint paper with her and Colleen du Plessis, entitled “Diversity, variation and fairness: Equivalence in national level language assessments”, discussed the unfair outcomes of the Grade 12 exit examinations in the 11 home languages offered in South African schools. The paper reported on the findings of a project initially commissioned by Umalusi, in order to make recommendations on overcoming unfair practices in these exams. It will also be the focus of a chapter for the Routledge World Yearbook of Education that is planned for 2017.
