ICELDA project associate Dr Gustav Butler of North-West University’s Vaal Triangle Campus has been appointed as director of their School of Languages. After obtaining the MA in Applied linguistics cum laude at NWU in 1999, Dr Butler completed his doctorate at the University of Pretoria under the supervision of ICELDA CEO Albert Weideman. The title of his thesis, the basis of his expertise as one of South Africa’s foremost experts on academic writing, was A framework for course design in academic writing for tertiary education. He has wide experience of designing discipline-specific language courses, and was a key member, with Avasha Rambiritch, of the team that won the SA-Finland cooperation agreement award for the design of our Test of Academic Literacy for Postgraduate Students (TALPS). He is involved in supervision of studies relating to ICELDA’s Home Languages project.

Gustav is also a co-author of Academic literacy: Test your competence, ICELDA's new workbook for learners in grades 10-12, preparing for tests of academic and quantitative literacy.

Our heartiest congratulations! We wish him well in his future career.
