Colleen du Plessis On 16 July, ICELDA researchers presented their findings to a large audience of educationists and officials in Pretoria. The seminar dealt with the search for a construct for assessing high level language ability in the National Senior Certificate examinations, and was hosted by Umalusi in collaboration with the Centre for Education Policy Development (Wits). In the first, scene-setting presentation, ICELDA CEO Albert Weideman spoke on “A conceptual framework for the assessment of Home Languages”, outlining the theoretical foundations of the current Home Languages project ICELDA is undertaking for Umalusi. In the second, Colleen du Plessis gave her provisional analysis of which language abilities are being assessed in the current set of examination papers for Grade 12 exit exams, and their alignment or lack of alignment with the new syllabus (CAPS). Biki Lepota from Umalusi gave an overview of Umalusi’s concerns, and the broad outlines of the project were also clarified.
