ICELDA’s chief administrative officer, Tobie van Dyk, was recently awarded a prestigious Erasmus Mundus fellowship. The Erasmus Mundus programme is the European Union’s flagship programme for international cooperation in higher education, and by receiving this award, he makes history by being one of the first South Africans to be selected for Action 2 (Sapient Mundus) of this programme. Its purpose is to enhance academic mobility between South Africa and Europe, and to benefit both.

Tobie will visit the Radboud University Nijmegen in The Netherlands during the first six months of 2012. He will be the guest of the Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Humanities and Prof. Frans van der Slik will be his host and mentor. For the duration of his stay, he will focus mainly on research. This will include furthering his research into academic literacy testing, as well as to developing approaches that foster academic literacy. Tobie is especially excited about investigating the outcome of an extensive survey (developed by a colleague and himself) which is currently being conducted among first year, final year and post graduate students from Stellenbosch University. The purpose of this survey is to gather student views on academic literacy development.

He will also attend two conferences, the first in Austria and the second in Helsinki, delivering papers at both.
