ICELDA Board membersTwo new members joined the board at its meeting last week, when several significant decisions involving expenditure of more than R400000 in 2014 was approved. In line with ICELDA’s mission to help build expertise in language course and test design, the aim of this expenditure is to expand further our capacity to develop and design interventions that can have a salutary effect on language development in South Africa. Having received reports on ICELDA’s Medics on the Move, Nurses on the Move, and the Umalusi Home Languages project, the board also gave further support to the initiative to tap as much diagnostic information from its test results as possible, to consider a Pharmacists on the Move initiative, and to assist in gathering expertise for writing a book on language testing in South Africa. In addition, we hope to upgrade some hardware for running a test item database, for which a data capturing expert will be appointed in the new year. ICELDA is entering an exciting new phase, observes its CEO Albert Weideman, adding: “We have now found our rhythm, and can much more appropriately respond to specific needs, not only in the academic world, in which we cut our teeth, but also in a much wider range of language environments.”
