ICELDA is pleased to announce that Prof. Annette Combrink, previously rector of the Potchefstroom campus of North-West University, has accepted the chairmanship of the ICELDA board. She will henceforth preside over regular meetings of the directors, who are drawn from the four participating universities, Pretoria, North-West, Free State and Stellenbosch.
After retiring as rector of the Potchefstroom campus, she took up a position as Director of International Liaison and Institutional Advancement at NWU. Before her rectorship she was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and also Director of the School of Languages and Arts.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and research grants; is active in many bodies at national level, and often in leadership roles. So for example, she is involved with the South African Qualifications Authority in the development of the National Qualifications Framework, where she is chairperson of the National Standards Body for Communication Studies and Language, as well as convenor of the Standards Generating Body overseeing the development of the national standard for the generic BA/BSocSc degrees. She frequently participates in institutional audits as part of the work of the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education (CHE). She is chairman of the Association of University English Teachers of SA; past chairman (serving four terms) of the Committee of Professors of English; and for six terms was the secretary/treasurer of the Suid-Afrikaanse Vereniging vir Algemene Literatuurwetenskap, to name but a few. She was also chairperson of the Aardklop arts festival board.
Apart from her illustrious career as academic administrator, she has also excelled as an academic: she has co-authored six books, and has served as editor of Koers, and sub-editor of Literator. She has authored more than 40 scholarly articles in accredited journals.

“We are privileged to have someone of Annette Combrink’s formidable stature chair the ICELDA board,” says Prof. Albert Weideman, ICELDA chief executive and head of the Department of English, University of the Free State. “She will bring not only her vast experience, but also much needed leadership as ICELDA expands and develops over the next five years.”
