Albert & Tobie At the annual conference of the South African Association for Language Teaching (SAALT) in Stellenbosch in early July 2013, ICELDA CEO Albert Weideman was honoured by a festschrift edited by Gustav Butler, head of academic literacy at the Vaal Triangle campus of NWU, and Tobie van Dyk, professor and director of their Centre for Professional and Academic Language Practice. The celebratory publication, a special edition of the SAALT Journal for language teaching, contains contributions and tributes from many of Weideman’s former students, colleagues, and associates, not only in South Africa, but from as far afield as Edinburgh, Antwerp, Nijmegen, Ann Arbor and Groningen. In his remarks at the presentation, Tobie van Dyk, ICELDA’s director operations, mentioned Albert’s role in establishing ICELDA. Quoting from the tribute by Diane Larsen-Freeman of the University of Michigan, he noted not only Albert’s entrepreneurial and academic prowess, but also his dedication to fearlessly tackling foundational debates.
